Ecology & Environmental Biology MRes
Our Master of Research (MRes) in Ecology and Environmental Biology provides specialised research training in preparation for a PhD programme or a career in ecological science.
Why this programme
Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting, in part, the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).
This unique programme draws on the research interests of staff in the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.
The MRes provides experience in a wide range of modern research techniques in animal in animal biology, supported by expertise in:
- laboratory and wild animals
- terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
- epidemiology
- vector biology
- spatial ecology
On-campus facilities are complemented by excellent research and teaching facilities available at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) and Cochno Farm and Research Centre.

Gilmorehill Campus is located in the west end of Glasgow, 3 miles from the city centre. This is where you will find our grand main building and many of the University’s teaching and research facilities.

The MRes also serves as a valuable introduction to UK research for overseas students. There are considerable opportunities to undertake research work in the UK and overseas.
MRes projects in the past have involved fieldwork in some of Scotland’s most important natural environments and in a variety of countries across the world.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
FOR INDIA
- 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in any degree related to Animal Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences or Geography. We may sometimes accept degrees at 2.2 Hons (or non-UK equivalent), if higher scores have been achieved in the subjects listed above, or in other relevant modules.
Country Specifics
- 2:1 equivalence: Bachelor degree at 55-63% (depending on university attended)
- 2:2 equivalence: Bachelor degree at 50-58% (depending on university attended)
We may also accept applicants with relevant work or research experience who do not hold a relevant degree.

- 2:1 equivalence: Masters degree (or Bachelor degree in Med/Dent/Vet Sci) at 3.0 GPA in Med/Dent/Vet Sci from University of Kathmandu / Pokhara OR First Class (65%) from University of Tribhuvan / Purbanchal. Bachelor's in other areas need a Master's in addition.
- 2:2 equivalence: Masters degree (or Bachelor degree in Med/Dent/Vet Sci) at 2.7 GPA in Med/Dent/Vet Sci from University of Kathmandu / Pokhara OR First Class (60%) from University of Tribhuvan / Purbanchal. Bachelor's in other areas need a Master's in addition.
