Master of Research (Biological Sciences)

The Master of Research degree comprises research and research training, requiring students to complete 96 credit points of subjects. The first year comprises of 48 credit points of research training and coursework while the second year comprises a 48 credit point thesis, which is assessed by two external examiners. The following disciplines are available in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health:

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s coursework degree from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum average mark of 65% or a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
    The Head of Postgraduate Studies for the relevant unit will approve entry into the Master of Research based on academic results and relevant experience.

Special Admission Requirements
All applicants for research degrees must submit a research proposal summarising the project they would like to pursue. We strongly recommend that applicants discuss their research proposal with their potential research supervisor before finalising their HDR application. The proposal should be 3-4 pages in length and include an introduction, literature review, research design/methodology, expected outcomes, and references. Applicants may consult Writing a Research Proposal Guide for assistance on writing their research proposal. The research proposal must be written in the applicants own words and all submissions may be checked for plagiarised material.
