Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management (Diploma)

The two-year Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management Ontario College Diploma program provides you with specialized managerial skills for the hospitality and tourism industry through a mixture of theory and hands-on classes delivered by industry professionals.

The first year of the program provides introductory industry and business courses to help prepare you for entry-level positions. The second-year focuses on developing management skills to help solidify long-term career success in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Experience a variety of restaurant operations-related roles in Restaurant International, Algonquin College`s student-operated restaurant and teaching facility. Some of these classes happen during the evening and weekends, to prepare you for the variety of shift work in the industry. Before graduation, you will have completed a minimum of 500 hours of practical industry work experience.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates may find a wide range of employment opportunities in the global hospitality and tourism industry. Career opportunities may include front desk accommodation, guest service/housekeeping, sales and marketing, banquets, transportation, food and beverage, attractions, events and conferences, tourism services and golf clubs. After a few years of experience, graduates may pursue supervisory or management positions. Graduates may also pursue further academic endeavours.

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

College Eligibility

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Applicants with an OSSD showing senior English and/or Mathematics courses at the Basic Level, or with Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission; OR
  • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate; OR
  • General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee will be charged.

Program Eligibility

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
  • Mathematics, Grade 11 (MBF3C or equivalent).
  • Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject-specific requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).
  • IELTS-International English Language Testing Service (Academic) Overall band of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT)-overall 80, with a minimum of 20 in each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20; OR Duolingo English Test (DET) Overall 110, minimum of 110 in Literacy and no score below 95.

For Bangladesh

Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 60% and no core subject below 55%

Or: General Certificate of Education (0 Level). Require a minimum of five academic subjects, of which one is English with a grade of C

English Proficiency requirements are as follows for consideration:

  •  A minimum TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based with no single test score below 20)
  •  Or IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 5.5)
  •  Or CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment) with an overall band score of 60

For India

One of the following:

  • CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) or ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) – Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 60% and no grade below 55%
  •  Or Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat State Boards – Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 65% and no grade below 60%
  •  Or all other State Boards – Higher Secondary transcripts – With an average of 60% and no grade below 55%

  •     1. Academic IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 6.0)

For Nepal

  •  Sri Lanka General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level Examination Level results or

  •  National Diploma (Agriculture, Technology)

All of the above must be completed with a minimum grade representing 65 percent or higher in required program subjects
