Building Construction Technician (Co-op) - Diploma

The two-year Building Construction Technician Ontario College Diploma program provides you with the opportunity to learn the basics of the construction industry, including techniques, industry trends, and safety. This diploma program is offered in a condensed 42-week format, allowing you to quickly get the education you need, so you can get moving into your career.

Hands-on from day one, learn various skills that give you the foundation to get started in the construction industry, including:

  • how to safely work on a construction site
  • drafting
  • structure design
  • the building of different structures in our modern lab setting
  • industry-standard computer applications such as AutoCAD

All practical classes are taught in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) facility. ACCE is fully outfitted with up-to-date equipment and tools, which gives you the opportunity to learn both traditional, as well as advanced technology used in today`s construction industry.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates may find work as apprentice carpenters. Graduates may also apply for entry-level positions in the following occupations: construction framer, interior systems installer, exterior systems applicator, door and window installer, concrete form worker, deck and porch design/builder, junior estimator and assistant project manager.

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

College Eligibility

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Applicants with an OSSD showing senior English and/or Mathematics courses at the Basic Level, or with Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission; OR
  • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate; OR
  • General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee of $50 (subject to change) will be charged.

Program Eligibility

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
  • Mathematics, Grade 12 (MAP4C or equivalent).
  • Mathematics, Grade 12 (MCT4C is recommended).
  • Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject-specific requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).
  • IELTS-International English Language Testing Service (Academic) Overall band of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT) Overall 80, with a minimum of 20 in each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20.

Should the number of qualified applicants exceed the number of available places, applicants will be selected on the basis of their proficiency in English and mathematics.

Refresher/upgrading courses are available through Academic Upgrading courses, the Centre for Continuing and Online Learning, and local school boards.

Bangladesh

Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 60% and no core subject below 55%

Or: General Certificate of Education (0 Level). Require a minimum of five academic subjects, of which one is English with a grade of C

English Proficiency requirements are as follows for consideration:

  •  A minimum TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based with no single test score below 20)
  •  Or IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 5.5)
  •  Or CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment) with an overall band score of 60

For India

One of the following:

  • CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) or ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) – Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 60% and no grade below 55%
  •  Or Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat State Boards – Higher Secondary Certificate – With an average of 65% and no grade below 60%
  •  Or all other State Boards – Higher Secondary transcripts – With an average of 60% and no grade below 55%

English Proficiency requirements are as follows for consideration:

  •     1. Academic IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 6.0)

For Nepal

High School Transcripts

  •  Or IELTS with an overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 5.5)
  •  Or CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment) with an overall band score of 60

For Sri Lanka

One of the following:

  •  Sri Lanka General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level Examination Level results or
  •  General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) At Ordinary Level (showing at least five subjects passed) or
  •  National Diploma (Agriculture, Technology)

All of the above must be completed with a minimum grade representing 65 percent or higher in required program subjects
