Design Strategy and Systems Graduate Certificate
The creative economy comprises of the following key sectors: advertising, architecture, art, crafts, design, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, research, development, software, toys, television, radio, and video games. The total impact the creative industries had on the overall California economy amounted to $687.6 billion (Otis 2022 Creative Economy Report). With the disruption caused by the pandemic, industries rely on technology more than ever to adapt to constantly changing conditions, thereby pushing innovation further, faster, and in new directions. Emerging modalities of engagement and consumption paired with changing technology and production processes are going to require serious shifts in California’s educational and workforce development infrastructure if the creative economy workforce is to better represent the diversity of the state and the global consumer. In California, the creative economy “outperforms industry sectors like government, manufacturing, health care, and retail trade – sectors that often receive greater economic development, talent development, and policy support. According to a report published by Instructure, the maker of the Canvas Learning Management System, in October 2022, students have also stated that they wish to have the flexibility to learn specific skill sets with an emphasis on career skills in preparation for entering the workforce. The Design Strategy and Systems Certificate can be taken independently to increase a particular desired skill set, but when completed with the two other certificate programs and a graduate capstone receive a Master of Arts in Design and Innovation. This certificate/M.A. program will continue to support and cultivate talent in the creative industries which accounts for 25.6% of the share of overall employment in California.
