Master of Environmental Management

The world is changing; sustainability and environmental management have become crucial issues, presenting significant opportunities and challenges for business, government and civil society. The Master of Environmental Management is an interdisciplinary and applied set of courses which outline some of the main decision-making frameworks and tools for environmental management. It also provides discipline-specific knowledge related to work in environmental professions. It can be taken by environmental specialists and non-specialists from a wide range of disciplines and interests.

You will learn to plan and execute an enquiry-based or professional project; undertake a capstone course experience that involves substantial scholarship; and apply enquiry-based learning and ways of thinking to new disciplinary and/or professional contexts.

*Term 2 intake available for the 2 year (96 UOC) and 1.5 year (72 UOC) streams only.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For the 1 year stream (A)

  • Honors degree or Graduate Diploma (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average (65%)^.
  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average (65%)^, plus one-year relevant professional experience.

For the 1.5 year stream (B)

  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average (65%)^.
  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average (65%)^, plus one-year relevant professional experience.
  • Honors degree or Graduate Diploma (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average (65%)^.

For the 2 year stream (C)

  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline with a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW credit average of 65%^.

^Students from a non-211 university in China are now required to have a record of academic achievement equivalent to a UNSW distinction average (75%).

Relevant disciplines include Environmental management, environmental science, environmental studies, environmental humanities, environmental planning, environmental policy, environmental economics, environmental engineering, environmental law, natural resources management, geography.

Relevant professional experience includes Environmental officer, planner, manager, or similar in government or for catchment authorities; environmental consulting, reporting, assessment, monitoring, and evaluation/auditing; environmental outreach or education, research assistant or associate on environmental themes; NGO or international organization environmental campaign managers.
