Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

You want to make the world a better place. Not only do sociology majors analyze what works within society, but they also seek to understand what doesn’t work. They identify and try to solve social issues confronting society such as crime, poverty, or inequality.
You’re interested in human behavior. Sociology is a social science that analyzes human interactions, so students in this major study individuals, groups, communities, organizations, cultures and societies.
You’re a passionate communicator. Sociology majors are trained to ask important questions, conduct research and communicate complex ideas and data in understandable ways.
You want a solid educational springboard for a career in health or community services, higher education, law, government, or business—or any job field that requires creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and analytic problem solving.
Today, career advancement in an increasingly diverse global society requires the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people from different cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, and social backgrounds. As an undergraduate in AUM’s Sociology program, you will receive individualized attention to mold your education in line with your interests and passions. We offer a variety of courses and experiential learning opportunities that promote community engagement and help you market your skills for a career or graduate school. Students are also encouraged to perform an internship or volunteer for a local nonprofit organization.

Since Montgomery is known for its Civil Rights history and is home to many social justice groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Equal Justice Initiative, we provide students with the perfect backdrop to study social inequality, peace and justice, and ways to bring about social change. The Sociology major offers concentrations in Anthropology, and Marriage and Family.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Your official high school transcript (which should be mailed directly to AUM from your high school).
Your official ACT or SAT score report.
Requirements: Full Admissions- minimum 18 ACT or 940 SAT score and 2.3 GPA, if you are a Bridge student, a minimum 17 ACT or 900 SAT score and 2.3 GPA is required.

Proof of English proficiency (unless you are exempt). You can take the TOEFL IBT (minimum 61 points), the IELTS (minimum 5.5 points), PTE (minimum 44), Duolingo (minimum 100), or the TOEFL PBT (minimum 500 points).
