PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for admission, applicants should:

  • Have graduated from a secondary school with at least 16 academic units, including at least four units in English, three units in college preparatory mathematics (including the equivalent of two units in algebra and one unit of geometry), two units in foreign language(s), two units in lab science, and two units in social sciences. Students who do not fulfill these course requirements may qualify for an exemption. Students not meeting these requirements are encouraged to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for more information.
  • Applicants who hold General Education Diplomas (GEDs) may be admitted on the basis of satisfactory performance on SAT, ACT, and other such tests and transcripts.
  • Have a minimum academic average of above C.
  • Submit the results of either the SAT, the ACT, or choose the option to apply without standardized testing at the time of application.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Composite score of 6.5 or higher. Sub-scores for each section of the IELTS must be 6.0 or higher. IELTS is valid two years from the exact date the exam was taken. 
  • Note: AU Undergraduate Admissions does accept the IELTS Online exam.
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) score of 120 or higher. Each sub-score must be 110 or higher. Duolingo is valid two years from the exact date the exam was taken. 
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 60 or higher. Pearson is valid two years from the exact date the exam was taken. 
  • Note: AU Undergraduate Admissions does accept the PTE Academic Online.
  • Cambridge Assessment English score of 176 or higher. Each sub-score must be 169 or higher. Cambridge English Certificate does not expire.
  • SAT Reading Test sub-score of 30 or higher (taken after 3/1/2016). SAT is valid five years from the exact date the exam was taken. 
  • New as of March 2023: Score of 610 or higher on the SAT Digital version section called Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW).
  • ACT English score of 25 or higher. ACT is valid five years from the exact date the exam was taken.
