Bachelor of Science Animal Science

Whether it’s the livestock who feed our communities, therapy animals who help humans in need or family pets that bring joy to a household — we need animals and experienced people to care for them.

In the Animal Science program, you will apply anatomy, chemistry, nutrition, genetics and more to the study of animal management, breeding, behavior and welfare for a variety of species. You’ll gain hands-on experience with animals to hone your skills in handling, health maintenance, equipment usage and breeding. You can complete a general course of study or choose one of two specializations:

In Providence, the university revitalized close to 100 acres of waterfront alongside our Harborside Campus, providing a stunning natural setting and a range of environmental and recreational benefits to the community. The campus’ 82,000-square-foot Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence showcases stunning views of Narragansett Bay and is designed as the nation’s first LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified culinary lab.

JWU offers very good job opportunity potential, especially for students who make the most of the experiential learning, internships, and networking offerings.
If you maximize what the university offers (internships, campus recruiting, alumni network), you have a high chance of finding a good job soon after graduation.
For international students or those planning to work outside the U.S., you’ll need to check whether your field is in demand locally, whether your qualification is recognized, and whether visa/work permit rules allow you to stay and work.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Entry / Academic Requirements (for International Undergraduate Students)

You need to have completed your secondary school (high school) with good academic performance. For international students, JWU generally looks for a minimum grade average of “C+” or equivalent.

Some programs have extra requirements (e.g. certain prior coursework, portfolios, or particular grades in specific subjects) depending on the major.

For transfer students (if you’ve already studied at college/university elsewhere), there are credits transfer options; there is a “Guaranteed Admission Program (GAP)” if you satisfy credits and GPA criteria.
