Journalism, BA
The journalism track prepares students for professional careers in the newspaper and related industries and for advanced study. In a fast-moving digital era, the curriculum enables students to become sophisticated consumers of news media and includes instruction in news writing, reporting, editing, and media law/ethics. Emphasis is placed on integrating new media throughout the concentration's curriculum. Students prepare for internships and entry-level positions at on-line news organizations as well as at traditional newspapers through writing for the student newspaper, The Pioneer Times, an excellent training ground for future journalists.

Classified/Career Service employees have the following career path options available to them.
Promotional Process
A ranked listing of our employees who have taken and passed the State promotional examination for a particular title, is provided to the Office of Human Resources for use when such titles become available at the University. This promotional list contains only the names of William Paterson University employees.
Permanent Process
Career Service promotional opportunities, when available, are filled by following the process dictated by the NJ Civil Service Commission. Each action listed below must be followed and completed prior to moving on to the next step.
Employees appearing on an active promotional list are notified of the opportunity. Those expressing interest are subject to an interview process, and the selected candidate is promoted in a permanent status upon the successful completion of the Working Test Period.
Provisional Process
In instances where no active promotional list exists, Human Resources solicits employees in eligible titles. Those expressing interest are subject to an interview process. The candidate selected is promoted in a provisional status and will be subject to the NJ Civil Service Commission examination process.
Advancement Process
There are titles classified by Civil Service Regulations as "non-competitive". Non-competitive titles are not subject to the promotional examination process as part of the requirement to advance to a higher title in the non-competitive division. As part of the application process, we will decide how your international transcripts translate into U.S. credits. This is not mandatory for admission, but certain majors and merit scholarships may require these test scores.
After you are accepted, you must take our placement test in reading, writing, and mathematics. Your results will determine whether you need to take courses in English as a second language (ESL) or certain pre-college courses.
