WHAT SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED WITHIN THIS MAJOR?

Skills developed within this major are grouped into three categories: 1) Technical skills, 2) Soft skills and 3) Domain-Specific knowledge.

Technical skills consist of the following:

  • Data Analysis and Statistical Skills: statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and data mining techniques.
  • Data Visualization: clear, insightful visualizations using tools like Tableau, Power BI.
  • Programming Languages: Python or R for data manipulation, analysis, and machine learning.
  • Database Management: SQL to extract and manipulate data from various sources.
  • Machine Learning: predictive analytics.
  • Data Warehousing and ETL: Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and ETL
  • Big Data Technologies: Understanding of big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, and their ecosystems for handling large datasets.
  • Business Intelligence (BI) Tools: reporting and analysis

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The following admission requirements apply to students who have not completed any college-level course work after completing secondary school.

  1. Cumulative secondary school GPA equivalent to a 2.3 on the US grading scale for most programs. The College of Engineering requires a 3.0 and the College of Education and Human Services requires a 2.5.
  2. Proof of English proficiency.
  3. Students who have attended a US high school or secondary school in another country that follows the US high school curriculum must submit ACT or SAT scores. These students must submit a minimum total ACT score of 16, or a minimum old total SAT score of 770 (before March 1, 2016), or a minimum new total SAT score of 880 (after March 1, 2016). Students who are applying to the Honors College and student athletes must comply with NCAA eligibility requirements. The Honors College has higher requirements, please see the Honors College website for more information.
  4. Official transcripts of academic work and completion certificates from each secondary school and university attended. PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. If transcripts are not in English, please include an official/certified English translation of the original documents. Where to submit materials

Meet minimum test score requirements:

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based): 78 and at least 17 in each section
  • TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based): 550
  • IELTS: 6.0 and at least 5.0 in each section
  • PTE (Pearsons Test of English): 50
  • iTEP: 3.8
