Doctor of Philosophy (Health and Disease)

Undertake research into the molecular basis of health and disease under the supervision of an academic staff member in the School of Medicine.

Research spans basic gene discovery and molecular analysis, through functional genomics and pre-clinical development to the testing of new therapeutics, underpinned by powerful and relevant experimental platforms.

Key areas of research strength are immunity, infectious diseases, developmental biology, molecular physiology, musculoskeletal biology, psychiatric disorders, hematology, cancer, metabolic disease, structural biology, and nanomedicine.

Ph.D. research is also available with the School of Medicine in the areas of rural and regional general practice; health and wellbeing, health service evaluation, public health, and chronic disease management.

Warranambool

Deakin's Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the picturesque Hopkins River, close to local surf beaches and popular tourist attractions. The 94 hectare site is approximately five kilometres from the centre of Warrnambool CBD, serviced by the Princes Highway and by its own railway station and bus services. Warrnambool has a population of about 34,000 and is roughly 250 kilometres west of Melbourne.

Admission requirements

Applicants are required to have completed at least a bachelor's degree, or comparable, of an acceptable standard from an approved university or other educational institution. Some degrees may have additional entry requirements, which you can find on the course pages in this guide. Masters degrees by coursework that include a research stream may provide a possible pathway to Ph.D. candidature.
