Doctor of Philosophy (Business and Law)
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a supervised research program where you’ll make a substantial, original contribution to knowledge in your chosen field.
This degree may be undertaken in Deakin Business School or Deakin Law School. An expert member of the academic staff will be appointed as your principal supervisor. As well as your thesis, you’ll also be required to complete a number of coursework units and meet certain attendance requirements.

Melbourne Burwood
The Melbourne Burwood Campus is Deakin’s largest. A short trip from Melbourne’s central business district, Burwood offers the perfect balance between city lifestyle and suburban comfort. Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus
At Deakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, you are surrounded by expansive grounds and impressive new buildings. It offers state-of-the-art engineering, medical and sport facilities, as well as some of the most advanced research spaces in the world. The campus also features incredible sporting facilities, including Deakin’s Elite Sport Precinct, which includes an Australian rules football oval, FIFA-grade soccer pitch, athletics track, basketball courts, and more.
Warranambool
Deakin's Warrnambool Campus is set on the banks of the picturesque Hopkins River, close to local surf beaches and popular tourist attractions. The 94 hectare site is approximately five kilometres from the centre of Warrnambool CBD, serviced by the Princes Highway and by its own railway station and bus services. Warrnambool has a population of about 34,000 and is roughly 250 kilometres west of Melbourne.

Admission requirements
Applicants are required to have completed at least a bachelor's degree, or comparable, of an acceptable standard from an approved university or other educational institution. Some degrees may have additional entry requirements, which you can find on the course pages in this guide. Masters degrees by coursework that include a research stream may provide a possible pathway to Ph.D. candidature.
Mandatory student checks
Any unit which contains work-integrated learning, a community placement, or interaction with the community may require a police check, Working with Children Check, or another check.
