Sociology, B.A. in

Have you ever wondered why people express emotions the way they do? Or what powers an angry mob? Then sociology is for you! The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology focuses on the study of society, social life, social change, and human behavior. You’ll begin to understand the influence of social forces on human development and decision making, why societies can change in some ways while remaining the same in others, and the causes and effects of social power and inequality. Courses in the program examine everything from the influence of politics and the economy to socialization, class, family, and mass media. Students develop a foundation in both quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as classical and contemporary theories for investigating the social world. Students in the sociology program also have opportunities for real-world experience through participation in original research and data analysis, experiential learning, community engagement, internships, and study abroad. Because sociology uses an interdisciplinary approach, our program prepares students for work and further studies in areas such as education, public policy, social and human services, criminal justice and victim advocacy, urban affairs, community organizing, legal and health professions, social science research, and more.
