Bachelor of Science Food Science

Food Science is the scientific discipline supporting the food and beverage industry. Food Science is a multidisciplinary field that applies biology, chemistry, microbiology, physics, engineering, nutrition, and other sciences to improve the safety and quality of food products; develop new food products; and design new, safer, and more energy efficient food preservation methods.

Food scientists strive to improve the microbial and chemical safety of foods, and enhance the quality of foods through traditional and emerging technologies. Food scientists conduct research to improve food safety and quality, identify beneficial food ingredients and develop new food products, reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of foods, and identify environmentally friendly technologies to make more and better food.

Food scientists address consumer demands and the nutritional needs of the world.

In the bachelor's degree program at WSU, students learn the science and the practical skills involved in production, processing, preservation, safety, evaluation, and distribution of foods.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be admitted to WSU as an international transfer student, you need to complete a minimum of 27 semester credits or at least 1 full year of study at an accredited post-secondary school. WSU requires a minimum grade point average of at least 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for admission as an international transfer student.

WSU accepts scores from the following exams. Score reports can be uploaded into the online international undergraduate admission application at time of submission or emailed or sent by postal mail to our office. Scores must be less than 2 years old.
