Teaching MAT: Secondary Education K-12 (NJ Certificate)
Secondary school teachers must be proficient in the design and delivery of instruction, classroom organization and management, and other research-based best practices that support quality teaching and learning. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s School of Education (SOE) offers a preparation program leading to New Jersey certification in Secondary Education (K-12) that requires 24 credits for certification and another twelve (12) credits to complete the M. A. T. degree.
Candidates pursuing certification to teach at the secondary level must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 30 credits in a coherent sequence of courses in the subject area to be taught (e.g., mathematics, social studies, chemistry, biology, etc.) or in the discipline taught;
- Pass the Praxis I Core Academic Skills for Educators exams (5713, 5723, 5733);
- Pass the Praxis II Test(s) required for certification;
- Complete the required courses and credits in an approved teacher certification program with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher;
Candidates for New Jersey Certification and/or the Master of Arts in Teaching are responsible for working collaboratively with their SOE faculty advisers, following the approved plan of courses, meeting all program requirements, and maintaining good academic standing per New Jersey Department of Education, School of Education, and Fairleigh Dickinson University policies.

If your program was less than 8 months
- You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.
If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.
If your program was 2 years or more
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.
If you completed more than 1 program
- You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.
Each of the programs you completed -
- must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
- Attested or official transcripts, academic records, diplomas, national examination results, certificates or degrees received from all secondary, post-secondary, university and/or professional schools. Certified English translation must accompany the transcripts if the documents are not in English.
- A copy of IELTS test results or TOEFL, Pearsons PTE-A results sent directly from the testing agency to Fairleigh Dickinson University. Include a photocopy of the results (if available) with your application package.
- SAT or ACT scores to be sent to the Vancouver Campus. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s SAT code is 5823, and ACT code is 2552.
- Freshmen who have completed AP or IB exams, students with GCE A-level courses and students who have taken coursework at another university may be eligible for credit transfer. Please submit all relevant scores to us as soon as they are available.
For admissions purposes, copies of the transcripts are acceptable. If the student is admitted, the official transcript will be required.
