Ontario College Diploma in Urban Forestry Technician (Co-op)

Urban forestry focuses on the care, protection, and maintenance of trees, forests and green spaces in towns and cities. It's caring for "the green in the gray."

As an urban forestry technician, you will require technical, applied skills, but you will also need the ability to work with people and communities. Your work will involve balancing, integrating, and linking the social, economic, environmental, and conservation-related issues associated with the urban forest and community spaces.

This unique 2 + 2 program blends applied and multidisciplinary skills to prepare for the demands of this emerging field. Professionals are needed who can communicate effectively with the public, understand and interpret legislation and policies, and have a broad perspective on planning and conservation. Upon graduation, you will be able to:

Identify and appraise a wide range of species in the urban forest
Maintain safe and healthy trees by applying principles of tree anatomy and physiology
Recommend appropriate arboriculture practices
Use a range of GIS tools and spatial technologies to collect, analyze and model the characteristics of urban forests
Understand soil characteristics, watershed dynamics, and wildlife habitats that contribute to urban forest ecosystems
Safely operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment
Demonstrate and advocate for an integrated approach to urban forestry management
Interpret legislation, regulation and policies relating to urban forestry
Plan, budget and implement business practices associated with the urban forestry practitioner
Apply practices and principles of urban forest management in an ethical and professional manner.
You will complete three university-level courses (Communications, Math and Introductory Chemistry) during your diploma program at Fleming College, providing an opportunity to determine if pursuing a degree in this field at university is the right choice for you.

Eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP):
Graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
Desire to stay in Canada temporarily for work.

Important Note:
Graduating from a DLI doesn't automatically qualify you for a PGWP.

Validity of PGWP:
Depends on the length of the study program or the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

Duration of PGWP Based on Study Program Length:
Less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials): Not eligible for PGWP.
At least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials), but less than 2 years: PGWP may be granted for the same length as the study program (e.g., a 9-month program results in a 9-month PGWP).
2 years or more: PGWP may be valid for 3 years.

Completion of Multiple Programs:
PGWP may combine the lengths of each program if:
Each program is PGWP eligible.
Each program is at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials) in length.

Important Restriction:
You cannot obtain a PGWP if you already had one after completing an earlier program of study.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the academic admission requirements, all applicants to Fleming College must provide proof of English proficiency in order to be considered for admission, using one of the following options:

Option 1 - Submit test results from one of the accepted tests listed:
Submission of English Language Test Scores. Applicants may receive direct admission by submitting one of the following recognized English language test scores with their application.

Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL - 88 with no score less than 22
Paper-based (PBT) TOEFL - 577
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 with no band less than 6.0
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) - Overall 70

Successful completion of Level 8, in Fleming College’s English Language Bridge (ELB) Program.

Diploma/Certificates require 70% grade in Level 8
Pharmacy Technician and Post Graduate Certificate require 80% grade in Level 8

Successful completion of English as a Second Language (ESL) or English for Academic Preparation (EAP) at an Ontario Community College, University, or approved pathway language.

Provide proof of language proficiency based on previous education:

Successfully completed three consecutive years of study at the secondary school (high school) level in English in a country where English is a primary language (four years, with graduation diploma are required for Pharmacy Technician)
Completed one full year of study (within the last 2 years) in an accredited post-secondary program in English in a country where English is a primary language (not applicable to Pharmacy Technician)
Obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 C) issued by a public or Catholic school board,
Provide proof of graduation from one of the authorized Fleming College pathway partners (not applicable to Pharmacy Technician, and post-graduate applicability is based on marks)
Completed three consecutive years of study at a secondary private school in Ontario and received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and English credit (Grade 12 C)
