Dental Hygiene Diploma

Dental hygiene is the 6th largest regulated heath profession in Canada with over 31,170 practitioners. Registered Dental Hygienists are highly educated, licensed and regulated healthcare professionals whose education and practice focus on the prevention of oral disease and the promotion of overall health and well-being. Dental Hygienists can work independent of or alongside a Dentist and are an important part of the health care team. 

As a Dental Hygienist, you will have the flexibility to work full or part time in a variety of settings. Dental Hygienists provide services and programs to people of all ages, addressing issues related to oral health. Responsibilities of the dental hygienist include:

Medical history taking
Patient assessment
Identification of patient health status and needs
Planning for patient care
Delivering education and patient services
Assessing the outcomes of care provided
Performing routine head and neck examinations
Dental and periodontal examinations
Exposing dental images
Oral hygiene education
Administration of local anesthetic
Debridement of teeth
Preventative fluoride applications.
To be successful as a dental hygienist student and professional, the student requires:

a caring nature and interest in the well-being of others
excellent interpersonal skills
excellent time management skills and study habits
good eyesight, hearing, and hand-eye coordination. It is strongly recommended that students have an eye examination and obtain corrective eyewear if needed.
ability to accurately follow verbal and written directions
ability to manage a fast-paced, demanding, and stressful work environment
computer literacy especially experience with word processing and internet
ability to model the same standard of oral health that they encourage in their patients

PSW Opportunity

Eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP):
Graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
Desire to stay in Canada temporarily for work.

Important Note:
Graduating from a DLI doesn't automatically qualify you for a PGWP.

Validity of PGWP:
Depends on the length of the study program or the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

Duration of PGWP Based on Study Program Length:
Less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials): Not eligible for PGWP.
At least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials), but less than 2 years: PGWP may be granted for the same length as the study program (e.g., a 9-month program results in a 9-month PGWP).
2 years or more: PGWP may be valid for 3 years.

Completion of Multiple Programs:
PGWP may combine the lengths of each program if:
Each program is PGWP eligible.
Each program is at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials) in length.

Important Restriction:
You cannot obtain a PGWP if you already had one after completing an earlier program of study.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

If your first language is not English you need to submit an English Language proficiency assessment.  The College of New Caledonia accepts IELTS (Academic)  or TOEFL (iBT) assessments, PTE, CAEL, and CELPIP along with others.

Standard Requirement
Level IV – English for Academic Purposes from a BC Institution or completion of the ENLA EAP 3 level at the College of New Caledonia.
