Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology / Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis

Kick start your mechanical career with this trade-level dual qualification. This qualification will set you on the path to employment opportunities in specialised diagnostic, servicing, repair, and maintenance roles. According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics grew strongly over the past five years with around 23,000 job openings expected over the next five years.

In this course you'll learn how to perform advanced diagnostic operations in the automotive retail, service, and repair environment. Carry out diagnostic procedures to identify complex faults in light vehicle petrol and diesel engines, electronic spark ignition engine management systems, and braking systems. You'll also gain the skills to perform advanced analysis and modification tasks to enhance vehicle performance in the automotive retail, service, and repair industries.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as an automotive mechanic or light vehicle mechanical technician.

Job Opportunity Potential

Working on a student visa

If you're a student visa holder you can work in Australia while you're studying. You are permitted to start working once you have commenced your TAFE Queensland course. During the semester, you can work up to 40 hours per fortnight and during semester holidays you can work as many hours as you like.

Some TAFE Queensland courses include unpaid work experience as part of your course. If vocational placement is required as part of your course, these hours are not counted in the 40 hours per fortnight.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

INDIA

  • Year 10 - All India Secondary School Certificate, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, Secondary School Certificate
  • Senior School Certificate (awarded by the Central Board of Secondary Education) 4 Academic - English must be at 70% or above with other three subjects each 65% or above

NEPAL

  • School Leaving Certificate (SLC)
  • School Leaving Certificate + Higher Secondary Certificate - Grade average of 60 and above for grade 11 and 12 results (combined for final results)
  • School Leaving Certificate + Proficiency Certificate - Grade average of 60 and above for grade 11 and 12 results (combined for final results)

To enrol in a course at TAFE Queensland, you must meet all entry requirements. These requirements are different for and specific to each course.

 They may include:

  • English language proficiency levels
  • subject prerequisites
  • course specific entry requirements
  • a portfolio submission or audition prior to entry for many of our creative courses.

While not an entry requirement for the majority of our courses, we do strongly recommend having a minimum previous education level:

  • Year 10 / 11 or equivalent for foundation skills and certificate courses
  • Year 12 or equivalent for diploma and higher education courses

Minimum age requirement

At TAFE Queensland we want to see our students succeed. We are an adult learning environment, but we also provide education and training to younger students. If you are under the age of 18, you will be required to meet further entry requirements.

English language requirements

For international students wanting to study at TAFE Queensland you must have a minimum English language skill level. If English is not your first language, you must have a minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic score.

This minimum score is dependent on the study level you plan to complete:

  • For certificate III, certificate IV, diploma* and advanced diploma courses: overall 5.5 (with no score lower than 5.0)
  • For higher education (associate degree and above) courses: overall 6.5 (with no score lower than 6.0)

*Some courses and passport nationalities may require higher IELTS (Academic) scores than the minimum of IELTS 5.5 and/or include specific sub-score requirements. These will be detailed in the important information section of the course information page.
