La Trobe has a long history of nutrition education, and our new contemporary Master of Dietetics both builds on that history and embraces newfound developments and changing ideologies. Our person-centred, socially conscious approach to nutrition science favours the teaching of flexible concepts over dogmatic facts, and aids you in establishing a strong professional approach and individual identity.

Applying your research skills in diverse practice settings, utilise La Trobe's long-term industry partnerships to gain on-the-ground experience in clinical and community spaces. With La Trobe's Master of Dietetics, you'll learn:

Care, counselling, medical nutrition
Learn essential skills in nutrition assessment, diagnosis and counselling. Understanding medical nutrition therapy and patient support.
Individual case management
During 50 days of placement, you'll apply your clinical knowledge, counselling skills and the nutrition care process to support the health of individuals and groups.
Food service
Through placement and practical classes, you'll explore the food systems utilised in clinical settings, and support vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.
Entrepreneurship
Get the skills to succeed as a professional dietitian. Learn how to set up your own business and explore professional ethics, leadership and management.
Future-focused topics
Explore future-ready issues (sustainability, indigenous health) and specialist areas of dietetic practice. Use emerging, priority areas (mental health, disability, aged care) as a conceptual framework to explore interdisciplinary practice. Work with carers and translators, learn community impact and advocacy.
Professional identity and diversity
Discover the scope and diversity of dietetic roles, from professional practice and standards through to the impact of colonisation and hierarchical systems on healthcare.

La Trobe’s Melbourne Campus combines parkland beauty with a vibrant campus culture filled with cafés, shops and a multi-level library. It’s also one of Australia’s largest university campuses. The duration of the internship will vary depending on the chosen course and subject. During this time a student will be expected to complete assessments based on experience. Please note that eligibility criteria do apply.

PSW Opportunity

  • As an international student, a student can work for 40 hrs in a fortnight and full time during breaks and is entitled to 2 years post-study work permit. This implies to students studying any course which is 2 years and above.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Degree entry: Australian bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum of a C (60%) grade point average (GPA) in the final year PLUS three years of relevant managerial experience
  • Professional entry: Applicants do not require an undergraduate degree but must have a minimum of 8 years' relevant managerial experience 6.0.
  • Professional entry (no undergrad degree): International applicants must have a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0. Please note that international students studying online are not eligible for an Australian student visa.
