Master of Science (MSc) in Data Analytics

The MSc in Data Analytics is a postgraduate masters degree course aimed at IT graduates and professionals, and graduates from cognate/numeric disciplines.

The majority of companies today realise the value of data driven business strategy and are in need of talented individuals to provide insight into the constant stream of collected information. Leveraging the value of big data for strategic advantage has become an increasingly standard business practice globally, resulting in an exponential skills shortage of data analysts. This programme aims to produce graduates who will be able to apply for roles pertaining to Data Analytics across all sectors of the economy.

Taught modules on the Masters in Data Analytics are followed by a Data Analytics project allowing students to apply their knowledge to a specialised applied Data Analytics problem which will be industry-initiated and used as the context for planning, designing, building and testing potential analytical solutions. Modules include, programming, statistics, technology enabled data analysis using machine learning and artificial intelligence, data visualisation, research and ethical studies pertaining to the field. Multiple transversal skills are also embedded throughout the programme including time management, communication, critical thinking and analysis, research, presentation as well as management and leadership development, ethics, project management and evaluation, and professional judgement.

Learners on the full-time course will likely be IT graduates or graduates of cognate disciplines and learners on the part-time programme will typically comprise IT professionals and/or graduates of cognate disciplines who are currently in employment and who require upskilling due to the accelerated pace of economic digital transformation.

The Masters (MSc) in Data Analytics programme will be delivered on a blended learning basis. Contact hours for the programme are a combination of traditional face-to-face classroom learning and virtual classroom also incorporating face to face and virtual lab sessions / workshops. Full time learners are required to attend 15 hours per week. Part time learners attend 8 hours per week, spread over 2 evenings and some weekend attendance would be required for campus based / virtual practical labs/workshops.

The programme leads to an award by QQI at Level 9 of the NFQ and consists of 60 credits of taught module work + 30 credits of an applied project. Learners who decide to leave the programme, after completing the taught elements only, may be entitled to receive the embedded exit award of a Post Graduate Diploma in Science in Data Analytics.

Our final year students from both the Faculties of Business and ICT recently had the opportunity to meet with some of the top business and technology companies in Dublin at the CCT College Dublin Careers Fair. These companies were looking for the business and IT talent of the future and they were not disappointed!

It was also lovely to welcome back some of our Alumni who are now forging successful careers with companies such as Amazon Web Services, Dogpatch Labs and Dun & Bradstreet.

The Careers Fair presents students with the opportunity to meet companies and broaden their knowledge regarding jobs in their industry as well as potentially meet their future employer!  Plus, even if attendees don’t land an interview with a particular company, they still have a chance to make a good impression and that is an invaluable opportunity. Who knows, you might be remembered for future openings that need to be filled! Recent studies show that 85% of all jobs are built through networking, so we encourage our students use this time to stand out to recruiters as someone who could benefit their company. The Careers fair allows students to have multiple conversations at once with different companies that pertain to their desired industry

Interacting with potential employers at the career fair can build students’ confidence –  we advise our students to consider the Careers Fair as a training ground for job interviews.  Approaching a potential employer can be a bit intimidating the first time but after students have done it once, twice, that discomfort starts to fade. Practice makes perfect after all!

The Career fair can also introduce students to alternative career paths they might not have thought about previously. “I didn’t know *that’s* what their jobs would be like.”

The recent Careers fair allowed our students to present themselves as a person, not just a piece of paper! It is impossible to make this type of connection when submitting a CV. The Careers fair and Careers fairs in general, allow students to dress, talk and present themselves in a memorable way. After all, a meeting at a Careers fair could ultimately allow you to get your foot in the door with your ideal Company and land that ideal job!

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Imagine that your plan for the future is to open a hostel that targets foreign tourists. Doing so would require you to have well-rounded knowledge on areas as diverse as architecture, culture, foreign languages, marketing, hospitality and accounting.
This would require years of research and experience after you graduate before you would be able to pursue your dream of owning a hostel. The new Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) curriculum at Assumption University will help you develop on the needed knowledge of operating a hostel while you are studying.
The BBA program under the Martin de Tours School of Business and Economics (MSME) is all about FLEXIBILITY. The new curriculum enables students to design their own curriculum that caters to their individual interests and career goals. Instead of focusing on business-related courses only, students can choose from a diverse number of courses from across different fields, while maintaining a business background.Applicants will normally be working in, or aspiring to, leadership or executive roles in companies engaging, or considering engaging, in international business.
 
Applicants will require a high level of motivation and interest in the discipline, have a sound knowledge of business operations, along with the ability to think critically and logically. They will demonstrate effective analytical and evaluative skills to inform decision-making, generate ideas and provide reasoning for solutions, as well as interpret data to draw conclusions.
 
For admission to the programme applicants should evidence:
 
An NFQ level 8 major award in Business or cognate discipline, or
An NFQ level 8 major award in a non-cognate discipline with a minimum of 3 years employment experience in a business operations or leadership capacity or
An RPL application from non-graduates evidencing satisfaction of the level 8 award standards for business.
RPL applications will normally comprise of significant experience, typically not less than 5 years, in a business operations, leadership or management role and or professional qualifications of relevance. The application must include evidence of the ability to produce written summaries, discussions and projects on academic and or applied matters to a level 8 standard.
 
For applicants whose first language is not English, English language competency required for entry must be equal to or greater than B2+ in the CEFRL. English language credentials endorsed by other systems (viz. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, Duolingo etc.) will be assessed to ensure they meet this minimum standard.
 
Applications on the basis of experiential learning or informal / non-formal learning must evidence an applicant’s potential to succeed through demonstration of ability to pursue the programme at the applicable NFQ level, in the discipline area concerned, and benefit from the programme of study in question. The ability to produce written summaries, discussions and projects on academic and applied matters will be important.
