Master's in Environmental Studies

The environmental studies master’s program at UMass Lowell provides students with a comprehensive education that includes policy, engineering and science.

Customize your degree with a concentration in atmospheric science or geoscience. Students interested in weather forecasting, atmospheric pollution, wind energy and related topics should consider the atmospheric science option. Students interested in the geo- and environmental sciences should consider environmental geoscience. Numerous opportunities for experiential learning in the field are available. 

In addition to conventional master’s degrees, students may choose a professional science master’s (PSM) in environmental studies. The PSM is intended for students who seek to improve both technical expertise and managerial skills.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Candidates for the program should have a bachelor’s degree in physical or biological sciences, mathematics or engineering from an accredited program and a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Statement of Purpose

In a separate document, submit a brief statement indicating your immediate and long-range goals, relevant work history, academic honors/awards received, any teaching experience and/or research conducted/published that may be pertinent to your graduate program. Two pages recommended maximum.

Letters of Recommendation

You are required to submit three (3) letters of recommendation. You will be asked to provide (names and email addresses) referees during the application process and an automated request will be sent out after the completion of your application. 

Official Transcripts

Provide a complete and official transcript from the institution that awarded or will award you a bachelor’s degree. You may also include transcripts from other institutions at which you have taken relevant coursework. Please note that waiting for additional transcripts may delay review of your application.
