Bachelor of Archaeology with a Specialisation in Cultural Anthropology
Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology concerned with the study of cultural variation among human societies. Cultural anthropologists study people and societies, with a particular interest in how traditions, beliefs, customs and languages differ from one to another.
In this specialisation, you’ll become confident in communicating how humans are shaped by interactions with their social, cultural and physical environments, including the processes of globalisation and other agents of culture change. You’ll also gain an understanding of the relationship between power, gender, ethnicity, race and other forms of difference and exclusion, and of how they configure identities and communities. The skills you’ll develop in analysis, critical thinking, observation and qualitative research methods will help set you up for a future in museums, education, research institutes, journalism, community outreach, diplomacy, market and applied research, private business, and cultural heritage and conservation.
KEY FEATURES
- This specialisation covers a broad range of topics, including illness and healing, food, art, consumption and culture, myth and symbolism, and ethnographic research.
- You’ll develop transferable and employable skills in analysis as you examine anthropological media and data sources, and assess such information within their historical, social and theoretical contexts.
- You’ll study the pre- and proto-historic cultures of the Mediterranean through the Greek, Roman, Coptic and Byzantine worlds, and further along the Silk Road to China.
- Participation in international archaeological excavations and surveys in Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and Turkey, in addition to local or international internships, will enhance your employment prospects.
- You’ll conduct field and laboratory activities in our archaeological laboratory with 3D scanner and in our on-campus simulated archaeological site.
- Learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom – you’ll have the opportunity to kickstart your career and put your new skills into practice as you undertake a PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) project in Australia or overseas.
