Master of Computational Biology
At the intersection of biology, mathematics and computer science sits computational biology.
This unique discipline requires a unique qualification, and the Master of Computational Biology, the first of its kind in Australia, builds specialist skills in bioinformatics, systems biology, and biological and ecological modelling.
You'll also develop complementary skills in business, communications and general scientific acumen.In demand globally, Computational biology is a growing, in-demand discipline, and jobs requiring these skills are constantly emerging and evolving.
We are already using computational biology to track and control the outbreak of disease, to improve our environmental practices and manage animal populations, and to understand the role of genomes in defining our appearance.

A course tailored for you
You'll take a customised first year based on your academic background, followed by a combination of core, elective and project subjects to suit your interests during your second and third years.
If you already have a background in computational biology, you can gain up to 1 year of advanced standing towards your Master of Computational Biology.

Develop your skills with real-world problems
You’ll leave the course with a major project to feature in your CV. You’ll apply your computational biology knowledge to real-world problems with a project in either industry or research (or both).
If you’d like to gain even more real-world experience, you can choose to complete an internship in a science or technology-related workplace for course credit.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
- You need to successfully complete an undergraduate degree, either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university overseas. You also need to meet English language requirements and be eligible to be offered an international graduate place.
- If you've achieved high marks in your Melbourne undergraduate studies you can even be made an early offer. Depending on your previous studies and experience you could also be eligible for credit towards your studies at the University.
TOEFL – you need a score from a minimum of 577+ including a score of at least 4.5 in the Test of Written English for a paper-based test. Or a score of at least 79 and scores of at least 21 for writing, 18 for speaking, 13 for reading, 13 for listening for an internet-based test.
IELTS – you need a score from a minimum of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0.
Pearson Test of English – you need an overall score from a minimum between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – you need a Cambridge English Score from a minimum 176 with no skill below 169.
